Wicomico County Public School District Scores Big Savings with Enel X’s Energy Intelligence Software

Wicomico County Public Schools (WCPS), a 25-school K-12 district in Maryland, needed help managing energy costs and budget uncertainty amid volatile local markets. The district also wanted to support its sustainability goals while handling demand response participation and energy purchasing more effectively, so it turned to Enel X for support.

Enel X helped WCPS design demand response strategies that minimally affected students and staff, including HVAC adjustments and turning off nonessential lighting, while also optimizing seasonal enrollment to capture more winter MW and manage summer peak demand. Enel X also advised on a wholesale energy purchasing strategy through the district’s consortium, helping WCPS reduce risk and improve cost visibility. As a result, WCPS earns about $120,000 annually in demand response payments, while gaining better budget predictability and ongoing guidance on market conditions and green energy compliance.
