Temple University Earns Millions by Stacking Demand Response Programs

Temple University, a large education institution in Philadelphia, partnered with Enel X to better manage rising energy costs, improve campus resilience, and participate in multiple demand response programs available through the PJM grid. The challenge was coordinating complex, facility-sensitive load reductions across several programs without disrupting campus operations, while also optimizing energy procurement and capacity charges.

Enel X North America implemented a comprehensive energy and demand response strategy for Temple University, including PJM Synchronized Reserve Market, Emergency Load Response, Economic Demand Response, and PECO Act 129 participation, along with supply management and peak prediction tools. This approach has generated nearly $4.1M in gross demand response revenue, more than $1.5M in energy supply savings, and over $9M in avoided capacity costs, while helping Temple maintain a consistent electric load despite campus growth.
