Signature Breads, an employee-owned Certified B-Corp bakery in Chelsea, Massachusetts, needed to manage its largest operating expense: energy. With industrial ovens and freezers running around the clock, the company required reliable 24/7/365 power while also keeping electricity costs under control. Enel X helped the bakery address these needs with backup generation and demand response services.

Enel X first enrolled Signature Breads in ISO-New England’s demand response program, then installed a 1,600 kW backup generator at no out-of-pocket cost. The solution enabled the bakery to shed 100% of load during demand response events, avoid peak demand charges, and improve resiliency during outages. As a result, Signature Breads nearly tripled its energy payments and savings, earning more than $100,000 annually while supporting a more reliable grid.
