Marcus Garvey Village Installs New York City’s First Microgrid Providing Peak Load Reduction, Standalone Backup Power, and Solar PV Self-Consumption

Marcus Garvey Village, a 625-apartment multifamily residential property in New York City, needed a way to reduce peak load, improve resilience, and manage growing energy costs while operating within local utility interconnection requirements. Enel X provided its DEN.OS intelligent software to help coordinate a new microgrid that would integrate solar PV, storage, and a fuel cell.

Enel X implemented a first-of-its-kind NYC microgrid with 300 kW / 1.2 MWh of lithium-ion storage, 400 kW of solar PV, and a 400 kW fuel cell, enabling solar self-consumption, 4-hour daily load reduction, and backup power for critical facilities. The project also supported market participation and demand response programs, helped the site comply with BQDM load relief requirements, and was structured with innovative financing so Marcus Garvey Village paid no upfront installation cost while improving ROI through incentives and ongoing revenue streams.
