How Related Companies Supported Grid Flexibility by Leasing Unused Space for a Battery Project
Related Companies, a global real estate and lifestyle firm, wanted to keep its Brooklyn Gateway Center property aligned with its long-standing sustainability goals while helping address New York City’s growing electricity demand. Working with Enel X, the company looked for a way to use unused space at the 1.2 million square foot shopping plaza to support the local grid without disrupting daily operations.
Enel X installed a 4.8 MW/16.4 MWh lithium-ion battery at Gateway Center, connected directly to Con Edison’s network. The system charges when demand is low and exports power during peak periods, helping relieve grid congestion; in summer 2019 it delivered more than 100 MWh and helped Con Edison avoid over $50M in network investments. The lease arrangement also gave Related a hands-off revenue stream while Enel X assumed operational and performance risk.
