How Pfizer digitalized its work permit process to reduce work-related injuries

Pfizer, one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies, faced inconsistent, paper-based permit-to-work processes across its production sites—most notably at its Ringaskiddy, Ireland facility—leading to poor transparency, rushed permits, and safety risks. Site leaders needed a way to standardize work practices, ensure compliance with corporate and legal requirements, and reduce on-site injuries.

Pfizer implemented Enablon’s Control of Work ePTW solution in May 2017 with a cross-functional team and integrated modules for permits, risk assessments and isolation management. The digital system made approvals and closures visible in real time, drove safer behaviors, cut permit-related incidents from 18 to 1 the following year (a 94% reduction), saved time and investigation costs, and is now being rolled out across other sites as part of Pfizer’s Safety Quality Excellence Program.
