Zebra launches active pedestrian crossing in 10 months with EMBIQ

Zebra, an active pedestrian crossing system, faced the challenge of developing highly credible software that could operate within the severe constraints of limited CPU computing resources and a small amount of memory. The goal for vendor EMBIQ was to implement complex algorithmic functionality with minimal computational power and sensor data to create a system that only activates when a pedestrian is near.

EMBIQ developed a synchronized system using WiFi, LTE, and RaspberryPi, programmed in C and C++. The solution resulted in the advanced APC Zebra system, which is available in four versions, each featuring an intelligent pedestrian identification system that activates road elements only when necessary. This project allowed EMBIQ to successfully operate outside its comfort zone by working on-location at an actual pedestrian crossing.
