RockWare, Inc., based in Golden, Colorado, develops RockWorks, a 3D geological modeling tool used across environmental, hydrogeology and mineral sectors. As demand grew and the company’s offering had splintered into 22 products, a small development team needed to consolidate a codebase (now ~2 million lines) into a single, efficient product capable of handling massive datasets and being delivered globally over limited bandwidth.

RockWare adopted Embarcadero Delphi, using its overlay memory management, multithreading and FireDAC database connectivity to create a scalable, graphics-rich application that runs on basic machines and scales to multicore/cluster environments. The result: modeling times fell from 15 days to 26 seconds, executables small enough for low-bandwidth downloads, competitive pricing ($5K vs $70K) and the ability to win large government and enterprise projects while continuing to expand the codebase.
