Wageningen University & Research's (WUR) Dutch Grassland Preservation Project

Wageningen University & Research (WUR) faced the challenge of halting the decline in biodiversity within Dutch grasslands, which were being converted to monocultures to boost dairy yield. This threatened rare species and sustainable agricultural practices. WUR needed a scientifically based monitoring system to automatically identify and track herb-rich grasslands using satellite and field data to create future incentive programs for farmers. For this, they partnered with Ellipsis Drive.

Ellipsis Drive provided its plug-and-play cloud solution to ingest and organize the diverse project data, from satellite imagery to ground surveys. The platform created an easily queryable, collaborative database that allowed all stakeholders to simultaneously view, share, and assess grassland data. This enabled the operationalization of a key biodiversity KPI, providing the foundation for incentive programs and facilitating efficient, large-scale monitoring to preserve the Netherlands' natural landscape.
