Crossing the Finish Line An Inspiring Story from Houston ISD

Houston Independent School District (HISD) serves more than 60,000 English language learners, creating a significant challenge for educators who must support multilingual students while meeting ELL compliance requirements and helping each child succeed academically. In this case study from Ellevation, HISD is highlighted for working to ensure students do not “fall through the cracks” and for fostering belonging and meaningful relationships across its diverse student population.

Ellevation supports HISD’s multilingual education efforts by helping the district stay focused on the individual needs of English learners and the legal and instructional requirements surrounding them. The result is a stronger, more inclusive environment where students are encouraged to collaborate and thrive: Houston ISD has produced a large number of top-ranked students who once struggled to speak English, with nearly half of this year’s highest-ranking students once being non-native English speakers.
