Safe, inclusive communications for the University of Innsbruck

The University of Innsbruck, one of Austria’s largest universities, needed a secure, inclusive real-time communications platform to replace slow email and scattered consumer messaging apps. Working with Element and its Matrix-based messaging solution, the university aimed to support staff, students, and external partners while keeping communications on-premise for data sovereignty, compliance, and GDPR requirements.

Element helped the University of Innsbruck launch its “Chat” platform on schedule for the new academic year, with Synapse, Jitsi Meet integration, SAML single sign-on enhancements, and Matrix federation for seamless internal and external connectivity. The result is a secure, open, and scalable collaboration system used by about 35,000 staff and students, with public rooms for classes, 1:1 messaging, audio/video calling, and optional end-to-end encryption for sensitive discussions.
