France embraces Matrix to build Tchap

The French government, through its Interdepartmental Digital Directorate (DINUM), required a secure, sovereign messaging solution for its civil service. They needed to move away from mainstream proprietary apps to maintain control over their data and ensure high security, leading them to partner with Element and adopt the Matrix-based protocol.

Element implemented Tchap, a secure messenger built on the open Matrix protocol and leveraging Element's technology. The solution provided on-premise hosting for data sovereignty, end-to-end encryption, and seamless interoperability across government departments. The results were highly successful, with Tchap scaling to over 300,000 daily active users and enabling efficient collaboration, especially critical during the shift to remote work in the pandemic.
