Polynesian Cultural Center cuts IMAX running costs and boosts attendance with Electrosonic

The Polynesian Cultural Center, a major Hawaiian cultural attraction, faced the challenge of modernizing its visitor experience to appeal to 21st-century audiences. For its 50th anniversary, the center sought to transform its traditional IMAX theater into a cutting-edge, immersive multimedia experience. To achieve this, they worked with vendor Electrosonic to upgrade the facility into a digital 4D theater.

Electrosonic implemented a solution featuring a 4K projection system, a 7.1 surround sound audio system, and special effects like moving seats, steam, and air blasts to create a fully immersive volcanic experience. This new system significantly reduced operational costs compared to the previous IMAX technology. The transformation was a major success, helping the Polynesian Cultural Center become Hawaii's number one paid attraction and win a prestigious Themed Entertainment Association award.
