Walgreens Boots Alliance, one of the largest U.S. drugstore chains with over 8,000 stores and a high-value mobile app, faced poor site search experiences—incorrect and irrelevant results, slow performance, high bounce rates—and limitations from vendor lock-in that prevented relevancy tuning, ML integration, and scalable releases.

To fix this they built an end-to-end, cloud-native search platform on Elasticsearch with custom analyzers, function scoring, a Relevancy Manager for real-time tuning and A/B testing, and Elastic Stack-based logging and monitoring. The new platform delivered a 4x performance improvement, drastic error-rate reduction, higher CSAT, increased conversion and revenue, and simpler operations and observability.
