Opower helps utility companies motivate millions of customers to reduce energy use, but most consumers don’t track consumption or know how to act. The challenge was giving nontechnical utility and Opower staff easy access to rich customer data so they can segment populations and deliver targeted, effective energy advice.
Opower built Utonium, an internal segmentation tool and UI powered by Elasticsearch, to put data and insights into nontechnical hands. That approach enabled utilities to deliver more relevant recommendations and has helped customers save over 4 terawatt-hours of energy—roughly the equivalent of taking San Francisco off the grid for a year.
