Infrastructure Monitoring at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology

King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) is a graduate research university in Saudi Arabia that struggled with fragmented monitoring tools and limited visibility into its infrastructure. Systems managers Stanislav Flachs and Gianluca Castellani found multiple, nonintegrated solutions left them cobbling together visualizations and alerts, making it hard to monitor systems reliably and increasing the risk of operational failures.

They adopted the Elastic Stack for its scalability, ease of use, licensing model and strong community, centralizing heterogeneous data into a single platform. By building dashboards, alerts and custom plugins (for Slack and email), KAUST improved capacity planning, reduced time spent troubleshooting, and cut costs, and is now expanding use with security controls and machine‑learning–based anomaly detection.
