NetApp, a leader in all‑flash and integrated storage systems, built OnCommand Insight (OCI) to monitor complex on‑premises and cloud data centers for intelligent operations, business insights, and ecosystem optimization. As OCI scaled, its original stack (Lucene for discovery, MySQL for storage, and Cassandra for time series) couldn’t support multi‑series visualization or richer analytics, limiting customers’ ability to see and act on combined attribute and counter data.

NetApp embedded Elasticsearch into OCI, replacing Lucene and Cassandra with a unified index of attributes and counters that enabled multi‑timeline visualizations, filtering, and hypervisor averages. The embedded approach proved scalable and extensible (with plugins and later Elastic Stack components), enabled machine‑learning‑driven anomaly detection, and delivered strong customer feedback by unlocking richer, higher‑scale operational insights.
