A Elastic Case Study
eHealth Africa is a nonprofit that builds data-driven health systems across West Africa, employing nearly 800 people and working in low-connectivity settings. When the 2014 Ebola outbreak surged, slow lab confirmations and fragmented reporting left response teams up to two weeks behind; existing health call lines were limited and provided insufficient visibility for rapid case identification, quarantine, and contact tracing.
eHealth Africa built a centralized call-center application using a sync-capable NoSQL backend and then adopted Elasticsearch and Kibana for fast indexing, search, and real-time visualizations. The system handled tens of thousands of calls daily, created a 24-hour feedback loop for follow-ups, cut response times from weeks to a day within weeks, helped curb Ebola across three countries, and now operates as a universal health emergency number in Sierra Leone while being adapted for broader health-system use.
