Cisco - Customer Case Study

Cisco Commerce is Cisco Systems’ high-volume e‑commerce platform — handling 40+B order bookings, 4–6M hits per day, 140K unique users, 36 applications and 300+ services across a 4M‑line codebase. The platform suffered repeated infrastructure/storage/network outages, 10–12 hour deployment windows, six‑month major upgrades and limited agility from a large monolithic codebase.

To address this they moved to a cloud‑native architecture: blue‑green deployments with Consul service discovery, API‑first decoupling, reference data in Elasticsearch, MongoDB for transactions, Kafka for downstream publish and feature‑flagged rollouts. In a 7‑month brownfield migration (no extra headcount) they rewrote core backend code and converted 110 integrations; post‑go‑live the system achieved fault tolerance, zero‑downtime upgrades during infra outages, ~5x performance improvement with sub‑second responses, removal of ~120k BE lines of code and significant logging reduction.
