Coastal.com - Customer Case Study

Coastal Contacts Inc., founded in 2000 in Vancouver, is a global online retailer of contact lenses, eyewear and vision-care accessories that grew rapidly through organic growth and acquisitions (including Lensway AB and expansion into Japan). That fast international expansion exposed limitations in its early e‑commerce stack: Coastal needed a modern, flexible platform able to handle high volumes, multiple regional catalogs, sub‑brands and distributed fulfillment without launching separate systems for each market.

Coastal selected Elastic Path’s Commerce Engine for its flexibility and scalability, replacing seven storefronts across five countries with a single, configurable platform that unified catalogs, store configurations, customer data and automated backend services — including refill ordering and online prescription verification. The replatform supported continued growth (revenue reached $217M by fiscal 2013 with stores in Canada, the U.S., Japan, Sweden and Australia) and preceded Coastal’s 2014 acquisition by Essilor for $430M.
