Starbucks - Customer Case Study

Starbucks, the world’s largest coffeehouse with more than 20,000 stores in 62 countries and 160,000 partners, runs a large, complex travel program—over 5,400 partners travel regularly, 4,000 travel internationally to 100+ countries, and the company buys some 23,000 flights per year (~$16M annual air spend). The challenge was to support frequent, sometimes logistically complicated global travel while balancing four priorities: cost, comfort, convenience and traveler safety.

Working with Egencia, Starbucks combined agent-assisted service and technology—on-demand reporting, negotiated and Egencia/Expedia hotel rates, a mobile app, 24/7 travel consultants and push alerts—to improve visibility, compliance and emergency response. The result: 82% online adoption, 93% traveler satisfaction (vs. 80% industry average), average domestic air fare of $475 (about $35 below industry), a $159 average nightly hotel rate, and stronger cost control and traveler safety worldwide.
