The customer, TWI, a world-leading research and technology organization, faced the challenge of designing an ATEX-certified encoder for explosive environments, which required overcoming significant material selection and explosion protection hurdles for a robotics project with InnoTecUK. To achieve this, they partnered with vendor EDRMedeso (Ansys) and utilized a suite of simulation tools including Ansys Granta Selector and Ansys Maxwell.

EDRMedeso's solution involved using Ansys Granta for optimal material selection and Ansys Maxwell for virtual magnetic flux simulations, which replaced extensive physical testing. The results were profound, as one week of this virtual simulation was proven to be equivalent to 12 weeks of laboratory testing. This approach drastically reduced the project's R&D time by at least half, leading to significant cost savings and a faster time to market for the certified product.
