Redefining Floating Offshore Wind with Ansys

OptiFloat, an innovator in floating offshore wind turbine foundations founded by Niels Christian Olsen, faced the critical industry challenge of the astronomical cost and complexity of maintaining turbines in deep water. Replacing major components required enormous floating cranes operating at great heights, with daily costs reaching 20 million NOK and total expenses often exceeding 100 million NOK per operation. To validate their groundbreaking design and provide assurance for investments, OptiFloat turned to EDRMedeso and utilized Ansys simulation software, including Ansys AQWA and Ansys Mechanical Enterprise.

Through the Ansys Startup Program supported by EDRMedeso, OptiFloat implemented a rigorous simulation solution to model the complex physics of their innovative foundation. This allowed them to precisely analyze structural responses, quantify challenging multi-physics, and optimize their design virtually before costly physical wave tank testing. The partnership with EDRMedeso provided crucial technical expertise, empowering OptiFloat to save significant time and resources, accelerate their innovation process, and develop a viable solution poised to redefine floating offshore wind energy.
