Particle Analysis and Cloud Computing Produce Mining Solutions Built to Last

Metso Outotec, a developer of mining and aggregates equipment, faced the challenge of accurately simulating how rock loads behave inside its machinery. Their existing structural analysis tools could not model the transient behavior of particles, forcing the team to rely on engineering estimates and multiple costly prototype builds. To solve this, they worked with vendor EDRMedeso to implement a new simulation solution.

EDRMedeso provided a solution combining Rocky DEM for particle flow analysis with the Rescale cloud computing platform. This integration allowed Metso Outotec to run complex simulations with millions of particles, accelerating calculation times by two to three times compared to their onsite computers. The results gave engineers detailed insight into equipment stresses, significantly reducing the need for physical prototypes and enabling more dependable designs to be delivered to customers.
