Case Study: Mazda Motor Corporation improves lighting design and reduces prototyping with Ansys SPEOS

A EDRMedeso Case Study

Preview of the Mazda Motor Corporation Case Study

Mazda Sees the Light with Ansys SPEOS

Mazda Motor Corporation faced challenges in evaluating the optical performance of its vehicle lights and interiors. The company lacked the ability to independently verify supplier proposals or quantify human sensations like visual comfort early in development. To front-load this process and reduce reliance on costly physical prototypes, Mazda implemented EDRMedeso's Ansys SPEOS optical analysis software.

The solution provided by EDRMedeso enabled a shift to model-based development. Using Ansys SPEOS, Mazda engineers could accurately simulate and quantify light performance, leading to a significant reduction in physical prototypes—eliminating two or three per project on average. This saved substantial costs, as each prototype mold could cost up to 10 million yen. The software also improved collaboration with suppliers and internal design teams by providing visual, quantitative data to justify design changes, resulting in more efficient development and a superior user experience.
