Electroflight - Customer Case Study

Electroflight, a UK-based startup developing high-integrity battery systems for aerospace, faced the challenge of designing the world's fastest all-electric aircraft. A key hurdle was selecting a material for a critical battery mounting plate that could withstand high operating temperatures and thermal runaway events. They also needed to integrate material data directly into their simulation workflows and carefully scrutinize their entire bill of materials for sustainability and regulatory compliance. To meet these challenges, they turned to vendor EDRMedeso and leveraged the Ansys Granta suite of tools.

EDRMedeso's Ansys Granta solutions enabled Electroflight to integrate simulation-ready material data directly into their analysis with Granta MDS. They used Granta Selector to successfully down-select from numerous polymers to three optimal candidates—polyamide, polycarbonate, and polyetherimide—by making critical trade-offs between properties like heat tolerance and cost. Furthermore, Granta MI provided tools for early-stage sustainability assessment, allowing the team to estimate CO2 emissions and ensure compliance with regulations. This comprehensive material strategy supported Electroflight in achieving its performance targets and breaking the world speed record for an all-electric aircraft in 2021.
