A EDRMedeso Case Study
Centro Nacional del Hidrógeno (CNH2) sought to overcome the challenges of high cost and poor durability in proton-exchange membrane water electrolyzers, which are vital for storing renewable energy as hydrogen. Their specific challenge within the ENHIGMA project was to optimize the expensive bipolar plate component to improve flow distribution and prevent efficiency-reducing hot spots within the cell.
Using EDRMedeso's ANSYS Fluent software with its specialized PEM electrolysis model, the team performed complex multiphase computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. The solution from EDRMedeso, accelerated by ANSYS HPC parallel processing, revealed critical flaws in the standard straight channel plate design, showing how it caused flow blockage at high currents. These conclusive results provided by EDRMedeso's tools are contributing directly to the future manufacture of more cost-competitive, efficient, and durable electrolyzers.
