Case Study: AFRY improves hydrogen safety with Ansys Fluent from EDRMedeso

A EDRMedeso Case Study

Preview of the AFRY Case Study

AFRY is pioneering safety in hydrogen energy systems using Ansys Fluent

AFRY, a leading European engineering and consulting firm, faced significant safety challenges in advancing hydrogen energy systems. The high diffusivity and explosive potential of hydrogen, especially when stored at 700 bar in confined spaces like bus depots, posed catastrophic risks including lethal shockwaves and devastating explosions. To assess these dangers and design effective mitigation measures, AFRY partnered with EDRMedeso and utilized Ansys Fluent computational fluid dynamics software.

EDRMedeso's solution involved a high-fidelity Ansys Fluent simulation with an 18.7 million-cell mesh to model shockwave propagation and hydrogen dispersion. This analysis provided critical, actionable insights, identifying lethal risk zones and validating the necessity of secondary pressure relief valves (PRVs) to prevent catastrophic failure. The results enabled AFRY to make informed design decisions that enhance safety, protect lives and infrastructure, and secure the sustainable rollout of hydrogen technology.
