A Edmentum Case Study
Expo Alternative Learning Center in Waterloo, IA transformed a former elementary school into a one-stop alternative education hub serving 350–400 students in grades 6–12 across six programs. Leaders faced wide academic gaps, varied learning abilities, and behavioral challenges that made traditional classrooms ineffective for many students.
Expo implemented Plato Courseware across the building to create a blended-learning model where students complete core academics online while receiving in-person nonacademic support and counseling. The online, self‑paced approach reduced classroom distractions and re-engaged students—at-risk learners showed 5–10% annual gains in reading and science and maintained math performance on grade 11 state tests—and Expo is expanding virtual and community-based options to further support transitions back to home schools and postsecondary paths.
