Success for All Students, at Every Level

Danville Area School District, a rural district in Pennsylvania’s Susquehanna Valley serving about 2,500 students and 210 teachers, set a strategic goal to use technology to individualize instruction and accurately monitor student progress across a widely diverse student population. The main challenge was implementing a consistent, data-driven approach that could support enrichment for advanced learners, remediation for struggling students, and progress monitoring for IEPs at every level.

To meet that need DASD adopted Study Island in 2009 (and later Reading Eggs for early learners) as a districtwide solution for benchmarking, targeted instruction, and progress monitoring. The data-driven approach helped drive substantial gains: literature Keystone proficiency reached 80% in 2013–14 (highest in the region), Algebra I proficiency was 73% in 2014, and PSSA reading and math proficiency rose markedly from 2008 to 2012. Danville Area High School was named a National Blue Ribbon School in 2014 and posted top regional performance on state metrics.
