State Initiative Makes Local Impact in Keokuk

Keokuk High School in Keokuk, Iowa, serving a diverse and often at‑risk student population, needed a better way to prevent dropouts and deliver credit recovery. Traditional packet‑based courses and limited resources left students waiting for materials or unable to keep pace due to medical, family, or work obligations, so the district sought a flexible, career‑focused approach aligned with the state’s iJAG initiative.

KHS implemented a blended‑learning alternative using Plato Courseware, building custom Iowa Core–aligned courses, offering flexible morning/afternoon sessions, summer school, and remote supervision. In seven years the program helped roughly 250 seniors graduate who might otherwise have dropped out, and the district graduation rate climbed from 81% to 91.14% over three years, alongside numerous individual success stories.
