Standards-Based, Up-to-the-Minute Data Makes the Difference

Vero Beach High School in Vero Beach, FL, led by principal Eric Seymour, faced the challenge of helping students who were behind during a turbulent year of statewide transitions to FCAT 2.0 and the Common Core. Existing SIS/LMS tools provided only lagging data, so the school needed a formative, standards-aligned system that integrated with Sunshine State Standards and RTI to give teachers up-to-the-minute insight into student performance.

The school implemented Edmentum’s Study Island, using its Custom Assessment Builder to establish baselines and provide standards-aligned practice in class and at home (78% of students used it outside school). The result: strong gains on state tests—78% of struggling 9th–10th grade readers made FCAT learning gains, Level I readers showed significant improvement, the school posted an all-time high SAT score nearly 100 points above the state average, and teachers validated Study Island records as evidence of student proficiency for college applications.
