Small School with Big Course Offerings in Noxon

Noxon Public Schools is a small K–12 district in rural Montana serving about 181 students with a limited teaching staff and high levels of economic disadvantage. The district needed a way to offer a wider, more engaging range of electives and provide credit recovery and college-preparatory experiences that a small faculty and a 12-seat computer lab could not support on its own.

By implementing Edmentum’s Plato Courseware in a self‑paced computer lab overseen by DLC coordinator Cindy Waymire, Noxon expanded its course catalog (including popular electives like criminology), supported first-time credit recovery, and prepared students for postsecondary work. The program filled the class schedule, boosted student engagement, and helped the district go five years with no dropouts; in 2013–14 and 2014–15 every high school student met Montana’s completion requirements.
