Serving the Students on the Margins in Malden

Malden High School in Malden, MA, serves 1,883 students and is one of the nation’s most diverse high schools, with large populations of English language learners, economically disadvantaged students, and students with special education or socio-emotional needs. That diversity, combined with students who are homebound, suspended, or otherwise behind on credits, made differentiation difficult and left many learners at risk of falling through the cracks.

MHS adopted Edmentum Courseware as an online alternative—starting in an outreach program and expanding schoolwide and into summer—offering flexible, research-driven units accessible via the school’s 1:1 device program. Over eight years the tool enrolled 80 summer students, supported steady graduation-rate gains (about +1% per year), enabled students to recover credits remotely (one student completed 45 hours in a week to graduate), and is being expanded to add more courses and ELL supports.
