A Edmentum Case Study
La Porte Community Schools’ Virtual Learning Academy (La Porte, IN) was launched in 2012–13 to serve at-risk high school students who struggle to succeed in a traditional schedule because of health issues, jobs, childcare, or attention and behavioral challenges. Originally created for credit recovery with seven students, the program quickly scaled to serve 181 students across three locations by fall 2013.
The academy combines Plato Courseware and Edmentum Accucess with in-person support from licensed teachers and trained paraprofessionals, individualized learning plans, and access to high school facilities. In its first year the program awarded 375 academic credits, helped 53 students meet district academic goals, and enabled 15 students to earn diplomas; leaders report the blended model’s standards-based content plus targeted human intervention as the key to sustained growth and planned districtwide expansion.
