Providing Flexible Credit Options in Middlebury

Northridge Middle School in Middlebury, Indiana, led by blended learning teacher Lauren Bailey, needed a more flexible way to deliver coursework and keep students in the district who might otherwise turn to homeschooling or external virtual schools. The school sought options to supplement its curriculum and serve diverse learners—students with severe anxiety, homebound students, those needing alternative schedules, gifted learners, and others who struggle in a traditional classroom.

NMS implemented a blended learning lab using Edmentum’s suite (EdOptions Academy, Courseware, and Study Island), with flexible attendance schedules and teacher dashboards for real-time monitoring. The program has delivered more than 150 high school credits to middle schoolers, attracted 25 out-of-district students as school of record, boosted student engagement and success across populations, reduced absences, and positioned the school to expand online offerings as it moves to a one-to-one environment.
