Positive Support and Parental Involvement Lead to Success in Resaca

Tolbert Elementary School in Resaca, GA (K–5, 561 students) serves a largely economically disadvantaged community and faced limited resources, low science and social studies scores, and a need for more real test experience and vocabulary exposure. The school sought ways to give students more practice across ELA, math, science, and social studies to raise proficiency.

Tolbert implemented Edmentum’s Study Island—initially paid for by the PTO and later provided by the district—using schoolwide stations, at-home access, and incentives through its Tribe Tickets system to reward blue ribbons. The program boosted engagement and practice; since 2010 proficiency rose in every subject, students not meeting expectations in science and social studies fell from over a quarter in 2011–12 to 10% in 2013–14, and students completed nearly 102,000 Study Island questions in March 2016 with 5,728 hours logged in 2015–16, outperforming district and state averages.
