Case Study: Portland Elementary School achieves double-digit MAP score gains with Edmentum's Study Island

A Edmentum Case Study

Preview of the Portland Elementary School Case Study

Portland Elementary in Springfield, Missouri, saw a double-digit increase on the MAP test after implementing Study Island

Portland Elementary in Springfield, Missouri, is a 247-student Title I neighborhood school where about 80% of students receive free or reduced lunches. After years of falling short on Adequate Yearly Progress in communication arts, Principal Dr. Lora Hopper sought a standards-aligned, technology-based program to boost student performance and ensure her students wouldn’t become another statistic.

In June 2009 the school implemented Study Island for grades 3–5, using weekly lab sessions and teacher-customized lessons that offer standards-aligned practice, game and test modes, and automatic remediation. Within two years Portland saw a 22% gain in MAP communication arts scores and a 40% gain in MAP mathematics, with teachers reporting easier lesson targeting and students better prepared for state tests.
