Lakeville South Math Intervention–Statistically Significant Implementation

Lakeville South High School (Lakeville, MN) implemented a targeted math intervention in fall 2009 to help 9th and 10th graders who were struggling to meet state standards on the MCA-II and GRAD exams. Previous after-school and summer efforts had low engagement, so the school needed a way to diagnose individual gaps and deliver instruction during the school day.

LSHS added a second math period every other day and used Plato Courseware to pretest students, generate individualized learning prescriptions, and monitor progress under teacher guidance. Of 127 eligible students, 102 participated; participants averaged growth of 5.12 (s = 8.1) between fall and winter administrations versus 2.6 (s = 6.4) for nonparticipants — a statistically significant improvement (p < .05) — along with increased student motivation and strong teacher buy-in.
