High School Equivalency That Makes an Impact in Indianapolis

YouthBuild Indy, run in partnership with Marian University’s Center for Community Learning, serves young adults (ages 18–24) in Indianapolis facing significant barriers: 22% of Marion County youth live in poverty and many lack opportunities to complete high school or gain job skills. The small program (about 70 students per annual cohort, 87% African American and 67% economically disadvantaged) combines high school-equivalency education with construction work experience to restore communities and prepare participants for employment.

Marian University uses targeted digital tools (Plato Courseware, Edmentum Accucess, and Test Packs), small-group and one-to-one instruction, and multisensory teacher training to personalize learning while students spend half their time on active construction sites earning industry certifications. The approach produced strong outcomes: in 2015, 86% of participants earned high school equivalency diplomas, the program has helped more than 300 students in eight years, and YouthBuild Indy ranks among the top 15 performers of YouthBuild affiliates.
