A Edmentum Case Study
Houston County Board of Education in Perry, GA, a large district known for its special education services, needed flexible, comprehensive K–12 coursework to support Response to Intervention tiers, homebound learners, in-school suspension, and extended‑school‑year programs without overhauling staffing. With more than 10% of students identified with disabilities, the district required solutions that could be used for group and individual instruction across grades 1–12 and for remediation in a range of classroom settings.
By implementing Study Island for elementary grades and Plato Courseware for secondary grades, Houston County expanded instructional options, provided monitored online learning for homebound students, and offered targeted remediation and supplemental instruction in behavioral and special education classrooms. The district saw steady assessment gains—students with disabilities reached 88% proficiency in reading and 71% in math on the mainstream CRCT, improved on the modified test (ELA +7 points, math +2), and outperformed the state average for students with disabilities by 15 percentage points; pilot students also reported more positive experiences and higher pass rates with Plato.
