Expanding Credit Recovery with Courseware in Michigan City

Michigan City High School in Michigan City, Indiana (1,665 students) launched "Operation Participate to Graduate" to address low graduation rates, initially using a daily 50‑minute, self‑paced credit recovery class that raised graduation from 78.9% to 85.8%. School leaders sought further improvement and expanded the initiative to better serve at‑risk and diverse learners.

In 2014 MCHS partnered with Edmentum, deploying Courseware (and later Study Island for assessment) across its credit recovery and SCALE alternative programs. The mastery‑based, individualized courses—featuring progress tracking, adjustable completion dates, and learning supports—helped students focus on gaps and accelerate learning; over four years the school logged more than 2,200 full‑course credits and increased its graduation rate to over 90% (90.3% in 2017), with credits earned across enrichment, dual‑credit, early graduation, and homebound contexts.
