Difference-Making Technology in a High-Tech School

Mare Island Technology (MIT) Academy in Vallejo, CA, is a 6–12 technology-focused charter school serving about 850 students from diverse and largely economically disadvantaged backgrounds. As a project-based, high-tech academy, MIT needed standards-aligned, differentiated, flexible, and low-maintenance online tools to support rigorous coursework, RTI interventions, CAHSEE preparation, and credit recovery while improving overall academic performance.

In 2009 MIT implemented Edmentum’s Study Island for remediation and enrichment and Plato Courseware for credit recovery and advanced pathways. Study Island supported intensive CAHSEE prep and tiered RTI instruction while Plato provided credit recovery and certification pathways; over five years the school’s API rose nearly 100 points, it met AYP goals, and earned statewide recognition including California Gold Ribbon Schools, Title I Academic Achieving status, and an Exemplary CTE award.
