Credit Recovery and Virtual Learning Improve Graduation Rates in Michigan

Taylor School District, a suburban district in Wayne County, MI serving about 7,270 K–12 students, was facing too many students failing to graduate and losing enrollments to online schools. The district needed a way to support struggling students, recover credit, and offer flexible learning options to keep students on track.

Taylor implemented Plato Courseware for in-class credit recovery and launched the Taylor Virtual Learning Academy (TVLA) for grades 8–12, providing laptops, 24/7 online access, and twice-weekly mentor sessions for academic and personal support. Within a year the district’s graduation rate rose nearly 8 points to 76.22% (in line with the state average), 22 of 24 TVLA seniors graduated, one high school earned a state Reward School designation, and TVLA enrollment grew from 138 to 211 students.
