A Edmentum Case Study
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS), an urban district serving about 133,600 students in 178 schools, sought a scalable, standards-based way to raise performance on North Carolina’s End-of-Grade (EOG) and End-of-Course (EOC) tests across a diverse student body. After piloting Study Island beginning in 2007, CMS expanded the program districtwide for grades 3–12 to address gaps in mastery, increase time on task, and better prepare students for state assessments.
CMS used Study Island’s web-based, standards-aligned practice, assessment and remediation both in school (including extended-day labs) and at home, with teacher reporting and parent notifications to support learning. Over the 2006–2010 period CMS saw steady gains: the share of schools making expected or high academic growth rose from 54.3% to 94.7%; composite math proficiency (grades 3–8) climbed from 64% to 75% (+11), reading to 62% (+7); and a correlation study found a 92% EOC pass rate for students who completed assigned Study Island coursework.
