Broadening Options for At-Risk Students

Riverside County Office of Education (RCOE) supports alternative education across 25 sites in Riverside, CA, serving about 1,500 students in grades 7–12—many of whom are Hispanic, low-income, English learners, or facing challenges like expulsion, juvenile placement, or parenting responsibilities. RCOE needed a comprehensive, flexible way to expand course options, credit-recovery, and test-prep across diverse locations and schedules.

RCOE implemented Plato Courseware so teachers could assign and monitor online coursework accessible in centers, labs, libraries, or at home, providing electives, credit recovery, GED/state test prep, and intervention support. The program helped nearly 300 students graduate last year—including about 50 ELLs and nearly 100 students with disabilities—and contributed to a county graduation rate that outpaced the state average.
