A Edmentum Case Study
Baldwin Park Unified School District, a 20‑school district in the San Gabriel Valley serving about 15,600 K–12 students (90% Hispanic, 75% qualifying for free/reduced meals, 40% limited English), needed a unified, standards‑aligned instructional tool after principals requested district‑level coordination. Teachers also struggled to differentiate instruction for large classes using mainly paper‑and‑pencil resources, so the district sought a cost‑effective way to provide targeted practice and assessment tied to state standards.
The district implemented Study Island across its elementary schools and then expanded offerings to secondary sites, using the program’s standards‑aligned content, individualized remediation, real‑time reporting and flexible access at school and home (and piloted Reading Eggs for early grades). Between 2008 and 2011 students showed significant CST gains in English‑language arts and math, the district’s API rose 65 points, more schools exceeded an 800 API and met AYP, and proficiency rates increased substantially (for example, Grade 2 ELA proficiency climbed from 31% to 57%).
