An Oasis in the Desert: How Bernalillo High School Helps Every Student Succeed

Bernalillo Public Schools’ Spartan Virtual Academy at Bernalillo High School was created to help students who struggled in traditional classrooms—older “super seniors,” current seniors needing recovered credits, and other at‑risk learners—graduate on time. Facing low completion rates and learners labeled as “misfits,” the district needed a flexible, engaging way to deliver credit recovery and keep students connected to school.

The Academy implemented Plato Courseware, aligning online modules to classroom curriculum, prioritizing seniors, and offering limited at‑home access to accommodate special circumstances. Since 2009 the program has served 264 students and produced 75 graduates (37 in 2010–11), driven a semester‑by‑semester rise in graduation rates, yielded a 48% average increase in middle‑school math scores, earned state recognition, and created a sustainable, in‑demand pathway for students to succeed.
