Achieving STEM Innovation Through Blended Learning

Maryknoll School, a private K–12 Catholic school in Honolulu with a 90‑year history of college-bound graduates, wanted to move beyond traditional instruction to prepare students for the 21st‑century economy. Leaders created the Mx Scholar Programs to deliver differentiated, accelerated learning—beginning with a STEM & Aerospace track—so students could blend online coursework with real‑world experiences and avoid being limited by the conventional school day or pace.

Maryknoll selected Edmentum to provide flexible, standards‑aligned online coursework and assessments and partnered with the Civil Air Patrol, BAE Systems and local STEM employers to add flight training, robotics, mentoring and project‑based learning. The blended model lets advanced students accelerate through content, freeing time for hands‑on experiences, reaches partner campuses abroad, and has already driven measurable gains (e.g., a 40% average increase in a beginning Spanish class and doubled teacher‑student communication), with the Mx STEM & Aerospace program launching to enroll student‑leaders.
