A Passion for Reading Beginning in the Earliest Grades

Tatum Elementary School in Farmersville, Texas—a pre-K to 1 campus of 253 students with a high percentage of at-risk learners—needed a way to boost foundational reading skills and motivate students who were disengaged and prone to disciplinary issues. Leadership sought an engaging supplemental program to capture students’ playful energy and redirect it toward literacy.

The school implemented Reading Eggs, providing subscriptions for kindergarten and first grade, opening the computer lab before school and over the summer, and scheduling 30-minute daily sessions alongside classroom instruction. The program’s visuals and user-friendly structure increased student motivation, teachers used online reports to monitor progress, and reading and spelling grades and overall literacy rates improved for previously struggling students.
